More than 60% of citizens would support accession of Montenegro to the European Union (EU) in a referendum, almost a third of them think that Montenegro is moving as fast as possible and expect Montenegro to become a member of the EU by 2025. Over a half of citizens believe that joining the EU would be beneficial for young people.
On the occasion of marking Europe Day this year, CEDEM presented the latest results of a public opinion research on attitudes and knowledge of citizens on Montenegro’s accession negotiation process with the EU, as well as the EU in general. The research involved 773 respondents and it was conducted from April 15 to April 30.
The results showed that over two-thirds of citizens are mainly interested in being informed about the EU. When asked to say who is most responsible for informing the public about Montenegro’s accession to the EU, 36.3 percent of the respondents said it is the government and its services, followed by the media, with 17.2 percent of answers, specialized services got 8.2 percent, the EU Delegation 4.5 percent, political parties 3.7 percent, other international institutions 3.1 and non-governmental organizations were pointed out by as little as 2.6 percent of respondents.
What areas of Life Would Improve the Most in Montenegro after the EU Accession
When asked about the situation in certain areas of social life after the accession to the EU, nearly half of the citizens think that it will improve in the areas of tourism (46.5 percent), employment (44.1 percent), protection of human rights and minority rights (43.2 percent), development of democracy and institutions (41.9 percent).
Also, almost a half of the citizens agree completely or mostly that living conditions of all people will improve in the long term (47.3 percent), that new opportunities will be open for young people (54.5) and that people in united Europe will be better understood (43,5 percent).
On the other hand, the worrying facts are that 24 percent of citizens believe that it will be harder to find a job as competition will increase after Montenegro joins the EU and over a third of citizens think that EU will serve for many people as a cover for realization of their personal interests (39.7%)
